An unstated reason was Prop. 209, banning preferences by race; governor promises more funding somehow for state's lowest performing student group next year
The CSU’s Board of Trustees voted in favor of Proposition 16 which would repeal the ban on affirmative action for university hiring and admissions. It joins UC and the California Community Colleges boards, which have also come out in favor of affirmative action.
Strong campaigns ahead for and against the measure to revoke Proposition 209 after 24 years. It will be on the same Nov. 3 ballot as the presidential election.
If voters repeal the state ban on affirmative action in college admissions, some expect only moderate change among racial groups at UC and CSU while others predict significant shifts to match California's overall population.
Bill would modify the Local Control Funding Formula to add money for the lowest-performing student group; it could violate the law barring preferential treatment based on race or ethnicity.
