Rural California: An Education Divide

When students miss school, they fall behind and often dropout. It’s a crisis in education that demands attention. In California, chronic absenteeism is especially acute in the state’s rural school districts. Of the 98 districts with rates over 20 percent, which the state classifies as very high, 84 are in rural areas. In Paradise Unified in Butte County, a devastating, killer wild fire magnified the problem and has driven officials to design new approaches to get students to school.
