LAUSD announces hiring freeze, potential school closures with federal funds set to expire
With pandemic-era federal funding set to expire in September of 2024, LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho announced a hiring freeze and potential school closures, reported LA Schools Report.
Roughly 1,800 staff members – including teachers and counselors – across the district are funded by one-time federal funds and may not be replaced once they leave the district.
“It certainly is a tool in the toolbox,” Carvalho told the LA Schools Report, speaking to potential closures or consolidation. “But it’s one that is used as a measure of last resort, and we are nowhere near that point.”
