In an effort to end the teacher shortage, California has invested hundreds of millions in recent years to fund teacher residency programs, in which residents work alongside veteran teacher mentors while they finish their credentials.
Proponents say the programs improve the quality of teaching. But many student teachers are unwilling to sign up because the stipends are small, or nonexistent. Listen to one teacher resident’s experience, and why she’s not sure it was the best decision.
