UPDATED: Database of Kindergarten Vaccination Rates since 2008
Use this database to investigate how many kindergarten students were vaccinated at any public, charter or private California elementary school in the 2013-14 school year. California law mandates that kindergarten students be up-to-date on a number of vaccines that help prevent childhood diseases, such as whooping cough, measles and polio. However, the law also allows the parent or guardian of a student to exempt the child from vaccines based on personal beliefs. The data shows that rural students are more likely to attend schools where a large number of students have personal belief excemptions, and public charter and private schools in general also have greater numbers of students with exemptions than non-charter public schools.
DEFINITIONS
Herd Immunity: The percentage of people within a population that need to be vaccinated to protect all people from a disease, generally considered to be 90 percent.

Personal Belief Exemption: A parent or guardian of a child signed a waiver to exempt the child from vaccines based on personal reasons.
Personal Medical Exemption: A child has a medical condition, verified by a health professional, that exempts the child from a vaccine. This could be due to allergies, for example.
