UC to offer free tuition to Native American students

Starting in fall, tuition and student fees at University of California schools will be fully covered for all Californians who are from federally recognized Native American, American Indian and Alaska Native tribes, the Sacramento Bee reported.

That’s according to a letter sent by UC President Michael Drake to UC chancellors. In his letter, Drake said the University of California is “committed to recognizing and acknowledging historical wrongs endured by Native Americans.”

Less than 1% of University of California students identify as American Indian or Native American.

In-state tuition is about $13,000 for the 2022-23 school year, according to the Bee. The program will be funded through state and university financial aid, according to the letter.
