Stockton Unified is deficit spending, according to County Office of Education

The San Joaquin County Office of Education expressed “serious” concerns over Stockton Unified’s technical budgeting in the district’s latest budget update, the Stockton Record-Net reported.

Still, San Joaquin County Superintendent Troy Brown believes the district will be able to meet its financial obligations this year and the next two years, according to the Record-Net.

Brown, in his report, projects the district is deficit spending this year upward of $7.8 million and that the district overstated its general fund balance by millions this year and the next two school years.

Brown said he was concerned that the district had not acted on information given by the county-appointed fiscal expert on accounting errors. Brown also expressed concern that the district is not using on pace to spend its federal emergency school relief funds in time — it has until September 2024 to spend about $180 million, according to the Record-Net.
