Oakland Unified attempting to block teacher strike

Oakland Unified officials have asked the state’s Public Employees Relations Board to declare a potential strike by teachers in the district illegal and prevent it from happening, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The union representing teachers is expected to release the results of a strike authorization vote on Tuesday and could go on strike as early as May 1, according to the Chronicle.

But Oakland school officials said in a letter to families that a strike “is not allowed at this point in negotiations except under very limited circumstances,” the Chronicle reported.

“OUSD firmly believes such circumstances do not exist and the procedural steps have not been followed,” the officials added.

But the union, the Oakland Education Association, filed its opposition to the district’s request and accused the district of not bargaining in good faith, according to the Chronicle.
