Fontana Unified names interim superintendent

Juan López has been named interim superintendent of Fontana Unified, the San Bernardino County-based district announced.

López will take the role effective Sept. 6 as the district searches for a permanent superintendent. The district’s most recent superintendent, Randal Basset, resigned abruptly last month amid an administrative investigation into Fontana School Police detective David Wibert, who was alleged to have acted violently toward students.

López, the interim superintendent, grew up in East Los Angeles and worked in education for 42 years in a variety of roles, from instructional aide to superintendent. He retired in 2015 but has since served as an interim superintendent at several districts as they transitioned to new leadership, including at the Coachella Valley Unified, Redlands Unified and West Covina Unified districts.

“I am honored to serve as the interim superintendent for Fontana Unified School District,” López said in a statement. “The key to a district’s success starts with a leadership team that is dedicated to working for the greater good of all children, and I look forward to joining this District’s team and supporting its mission of empowering every student to unlock their full potential.”
