Bay Area high school prom turns into a Covid super-spreader event

At least 1 in 7 students who attended San Mateo High School’s prom earlier this month has tested positive for Covid, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

The school highly recommended but did not require students to wear masks at the prom, held April 9 at San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum. Most did not, according to the newspaper.

As a result of the outbreak, the San Mateo Union High School District is requiring masks and negative Covid tests for students attending the upcoming Hillsdale High School prom.

“The district cares deeply about the health and safety of members of our community and creating opportunities for students to enjoy and benefit from student activities such as performing arts, athletics, and senior rites of passage,” Superintendent Kevin Skelly said. “We have been and will continue to be driven by these values.”
