Thousands of California students could be forced to take in-person classes or leave the country
The state of California and the University of California are both suing the federal government over the policy.
Almost half of California’s children live with at least one immigrant parent. In addition, thousands of Californian students from preschool to college are immigrants themselves. Immigrant families bring a wealth of language and cultural knowledge to California schools. Immigration policy also affects children. When families live with the fear of deportation, for example, it can severely affect children’s mental health and performance in school. California has pushed to make schools a welcoming place for immigrant families and students.
