Los Angeles Unified is at the epicenter of the charter school conflict.
The “transitional kindergarten” program is for 4-year-olds who turn 5 after Sept. 1, the cutoff date for enrolling in regular kindergarten, and before Dec. 3. Some districts enroll even younger 4-year-olds.
Groups say the district isn't complying with its obligation under the funding formula.
The five schools denied renewals are currently serving about 13,000 students.
The advocacy groups that challenged the district want an immediate remedy.
The shortfall for students with the highest needs will grow to $450 million, the complaint says.
