After a strike watched by the nation, United Teachers Los Angeles went back to work this week with a tentative contract offering a pay raise, commitments for smaller classes and more nurses and counselors, and a promise the school board will consider backing a cap on charter schools. Los Angeles School Board member Nick Melvoin and UCLA Education Professor John Rogers discuss the contract and its impact with John and Louis, who also ask if the district can afford the commitments it made and a bigger question: Can teachers and the district put aside rancor from a 7-day walkout and work together?
