* College has not provided 2020 enrollment data as of publication.
** The large drop listed in Reedley College is partly the result of a satellite campus becoming a separate college, Madera Community College.
*** College has reported the published enrollment figures for 2020 are incorrect.

HOW THE ANALYSIS WAS DONE

The analysis of California’s community colleges decline in student head counts was based on data downloaded from the systemwide Chancellor’s Office’s Data Mart  on March 19, 2021. The two primary sources of data were Annual/Term Student Count, for fall 2019 and fall 2020, which is the total head count of full-time and part-time students and Enrollment Status Summary for fall 2019 and fall 2020 which breaks students by classification such as first-year and continuing students. EdSource calculated the percentage change systemwide, by district, and by college using these data files. Change over time was calculated using the total number of students – head count – enrolled in the fall for each year from 2011 through 2020.  Fall term student head counts were used for all 10 years. The large drop listed in Reedley College is partly the result of a satellite campus becoming a separate college, Madera Community College.

Compton College was reaccredited fully in 2017. It is no longer an “educational center” as stated on the map published here.

It appears the Chancellor’s Office has taken down Fall 2020 data due to “misinterpretation of data the coincides with variation in college/district submission and verification as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.” Was the data used by this analysis obtained before the CCCO took down the Fall 20 data?

    Thanks,
    Tim

      Hi Tim,
The data used for the EdSource analysis was obtained from the official community college web site before the data was taken down. EdSource stands by its analysis and has again requested the 2020-21 data under the California Public Records Act. EdSource is committed to following this important story and will make updates as additional information is provided.
