Teaching Mathematics in California

California is developing a new framework to guide math instruction K-12 classrooms. Despite recent major reforms in the way math is taught in California, fewer than half of the state’s students meet or exceed the state’s grade-level standards, according to results from the Smarter Balanced tests. Progress in math builds on knowledge accumulated in previous years and the Covid pandemic has interrupted instruction and compounded the challenges that elementary and middle school math teachers face moving forward. In this section, we explore what’s being done and the challenges and hopes of teaching math in California.
