Elected every four years to a nonpartisan office, the California Superintendent of Public Instruction is the highest elected official responsible for K-12 schools. The state superintendent runs the 2,500-employee California Department of Education. Functions include administering federal grants, collecting school data, monitoring county offices of education and enforcing state education laws and regulations.
