To Readers of EdSource Online:

I wanted to let you know that next week we’ll be launching a redesigned website that will be more user-friendly and graphically exciting as we adapt to the demands of the new communications age.

New website, same great content:

We aren’t changing what we do, just how we display it. The new site will make it easier for you to access our daily reports from our team of EdSource Today writers and reporters, as well as our in-depth policy reports, surveys and other useful resources for the education community. In a major improvement, our redesign will also work with tablets and smart phones, so you will have easier access to our reports wherever you are.

Website down while we make the transition:

In order to move all the reports and resources in our current database – produced by EdSource’s staff over many years – to the new site, we’re going to have to shut edsource.org down for a few days. Please expect an EdSource blackout from 5 p.m. on Friday, June 20 until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24 while our web staff makes the transition. After that, we will be up and running on the new site!

Thank you for your patience during this transition. We look forward to your feedback on the new site when it launches next week.

Best regards,

Would love to be able to see more than the last 5 recent comments. This site attracts some very high quality comments and that's the only way to know that new comments have arrived for an article, especially old articles. The home page looks nice. The home page looks nice. The comments seem to take up way more space than they might need…. The commenting form has all this whitespace but still has a pretty teeny textarea that makes it hard to write a long comment and then read the whole thing before posting it.

      El,

Are you experiencing the small text area on mobile or desktop?

If it’s desktop, you can expand the text area by dragging the box from the bottom right corner where you see two diagonal lines.

Ah, draggable is nice. I didn’t see that.

But I still experience that commenting takes up a lot of space…. and I am reading this right now on a 27″ monitor. I tried zooming out but that makes some of the text too small to read. I know whitespace is very trendy but it’s not always functional.

Also, the readability of the comment font is not great even at this size.

Yeah, the comment section is much larger on desktop. I think it has to do with the responsive elements. Let me look into what can be done.

Wanted to let you know I increased recent comments to 8.

I have seen frameworks that allow you to link to a page of the entire history of comments, while still allowing you to just reference a subset of them on another page. In the long term, if that’s possible, that might be a good way to satisfy both of the competing requirements.fwiw.

Nice site remodel! I'm sure there's lots going on behind the scenes that I can't see, but for a user, I appreciate several new features: --The primary beat reporter and recent stories for each of the main coverage areas are easy to find on the menu dropdowns --The photo cutlines are nice and clear, and beautifully displayed --The share links are hidden until I want them, and then they work nicely with one click. --It's very easy to … Read More

Nice site remodel! I’m sure there’s lots going on behind the scenes that I can’t see, but for a user, I appreciate several new features:
–The primary beat reporter and recent stories for each of the main coverage areas are easy to find on the menu dropdowns
–The photo cutlines are nice and clear, and beautifully displayed
–The share links are hidden until I want them, and then they work nicely with one click.
–It’s very easy to see how to comment, or contact you.

Thanks again for being such an important resource to the education community.
