California made history Tuesday when the federal government granted eight districts a reprieve from some conditions of the No Child Left Behind Act.

EdSource Today Editor John Fensterwald discussed the impact of the waivers Thursday in an interview on KQED radio.

The districts, united under an umbrella organization called the California Office to Reform Education, together serve more than 1 million students. The districts are Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Francisco, Oakland, Santa Ana, Sanger, Sacramento City and Fresno.
